Project estimate
Estimated asphalt required
Estimated order quantity
10.419US tons
Includes the selected planning allowance. Confirm order rounding and density with your supplier.
Project totals
- Total paved area
- 540 ft²
- Compacted volume
- 5 yd³
- Base quantity before allowance
- 9.923 US tons
- Planning allowance quantity
- 0.496 US tons
- Metric equivalent
- 9.452 t
This is a material-estimating tool. Verify project dimensions, compacted density, mix requirements and ordering details with your supplier or project specification before purchasing material.
Section breakdown
| Option | Area | Compacted volume | Base quantity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main driveway | 540 ft² | 5 yd³ | 9.923 US tons |
Thickness scenario comparison
| Option | Volume (yd³) | Estimated order (US tons) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 in | 3.333 | 6.946 |
| 3 in | 5 | 10.419 |
| 4 in | 6.667 | 13.892 |
Increasing compacted thickness from 2.00 to 4.00 in increases estimated material quantity by 100.0%.
Density sensitivity
How density changes this estimate
The same project quantity at 5% below, selected, and 5% above the entered density. This demonstrates why a project-specific density matters.
Transparent arithmetic
Calculation formulas
- A = Σ(L × W)
- total paved area using the documented input variables.
- V = A × T
- compacted volume using the documented input variables.
- M = V × ρ
- base material mass using the documented input variables.
- O = M × (1 + p ÷ 100)
- estimated order mass using the documented input variables.
- C = O × r
- material cost using the documented input variables.
- N = O ÷ q
- load equivalents using the documented input variables.
Methodology
How it works
Sum rectangular section areas, multiply by finished compacted thickness and compacted density, then add only the user-selected planning allowance.
A = Σ(L × W)The full sequence continues from area to volume, mass, allowance, optional cost and loads.
- 1
Measure sections
Calculate each rectangular area and sum the project.
- 2
Calculate compacted volume
Multiply total area by the finished compacted thickness entered.
- 3
Convert volume to mass
Multiply compacted volume by the editable compacted density.
- 4
Add planning allowance
Apply the selected optional allowance after base mass.
- 5
Calculate optional planning outputs
Use supplier price and truck capacity only when entered.

Worked example
45 ft × 12 ft driveway
Engine-verified example using 3 in finished compacted thickness, the editable 147 lb/ft³ example density, and a 5% planning allowance.
- Area
- 540 ft²
- Compacted thickness
- 3 in
- Density
- 147 lb/ft³
- Planning allowance
- 5%
Important context
Estimate assumptions
- Thickness
- Finished compacted thickness No separate compaction factor is applied.
- Initial density
- 147 lb/ft³ Editable planning example from FHWA discussion; mix densities vary and supplier/project values should be used.
- Planning allowance
- User selected Added after compacted base quantity; not a compaction factor.
Planning guidance
What affects your estimate
- Measured paved area across every section
- Finished compacted thickness you choose
- Compacted mix density from the supplier or specification
- Your optional planning allowance
- Supplier price basis and delivery policies
Before ordering
Supplier confirmation checklist
- Mix or material designation
- Compacted density for estimating
- Price basis and whether it is per US ton or metric tonne
- Delivery charges, minimum orders and load limits
- Supplier rounding and project specifications
Scope
Quantity estimate, not pavement design
This calculator estimates material from the finished compacted thickness you enter. It does not determine structural adequacy, subgrade, drainage, traffic loading, lift design or required thickness.
Questions
Asphalt estimating FAQ
Why does density matter?
Mass equals compacted volume multiplied by density, so the selected density changes tonnage directly.
Can I model an irregular driveway?
Divide it into rectangular sections and add their areas.
What does planning allowance do?
It adds only the percentage you select after base compacted mass. It is not a hidden compaction factor.
Does this choose pavement thickness?
No. Enter a thickness from your project requirements or qualified advice.
